How this game can be won
Boise State Broncos average 34.4 points scored and 20.6 allowed; Washington State Cougars average 19.0 scored and 25.0 allowed. The first question is whether each offense can make ordinary downs useful. Repeated manageable gains keep more of the playbook available.
Watch the long gains separately. An offense can move steadily without breaking a big play, or spend an afternoon waiting for one big play to rescue it. The more repeatable approach is the one that can still move the ball when the defense removes its easiest option.
Field position changes the job. Starting near midfield means fewer yards are needed before a scoring chance. Once the drive reaches threatening territory, watch whether the offense finishes it with useful points instead of wasting the trip.
Finally, count the lost possessions. Turnovers can change a close game without explaining every down that came before them. Our football model needs efficiency, explosive-play rate, starting field position, drive finishing and turnover margin together. A scoring average or a third-down rate cannot replace that set.

Boise State Broncos · our 2026-10-04 assessment
Boise State
4-1 overall | Preview AP No. 22 | Matchup Lab No. 35 | Index 58.7
Boise State's recent offensive progress is more convincing than its record alone. After a 40.6 percent successful-play rate in its opening charted game, its subsequent FBS rates have stayed above 50 percent. It averages 226.6 rushing yards and has not finished a game with a negative net turnover margin. The offense has increasingly supplied its own progress rather than depending entirely on defensive gifts.
The 37-18 Utah State win extended that case. Boise gained 429 yards, converted eight of 13 third downs and averaged 11.6 yards per pass attempt. A defensive interception return added a touchdown, but the regular offense also kept drives alive. Friday's preview asked whether Boise could force a limited opponent to keep driving while using its own ground game. The offense delivered enough balance to control the result.
The defensive review should remain less comfortable. Utah State gained 345 yards and rushed for 169 at 5.1 per attempt, and its charted successful-play rate reached 50 percent. Boise's season opponents still generate a slightly higher share of high-impact plays than the Broncos themselves. The defense helped produce points, but a scoring takeaway and repeatable resistance are separate things. Boise should keep the offensive improvement and demand fewer openings for the next opponent.
Across the season, qualifying stops have handed the offense an average start at its own 21.3 over 29 possessions. Game averages range from its own 16.2 to 24.6. In the narrower 26-possession sample without an identified return or penalty effect, the average is its own 22.0. Those stops usually leave substantial field to cover, even before judging the offense. The offense has produced an estimated 4.31 points before extra points per scoring opportunity. That payoff must be read alongside how often it can build the next drive.

| Successful plays against FBS | 49.3% offense / 40.7% allowed |
