NBA reporting describes preseason trials involving smart basketballs and officials’ wrist wearables. The announcement concerns testing. It does not establish that the tools will be adopted for regular-season games.
The basketball question is whether a new measurement makes the next decision more accurate and faster. More information is helpful only if it reaches the right person in time and produces a repeatable result.
We would judge the trial by timing, consistency and interruptions to play. Players and officials should be able to understand what a signal means without turning each possession into a demonstration of the equipment.
Preseason is a reasonable place to expose those problems. The technology deserves the same test as a new rotation. Does the game run better when it is actually used? Until the league reports results, the trial remains a trial.
